Will founding father of the tea party movement get his due from party leaders?

Congressional Republicans used to enjoy the luxury of ignoring Ron Paul's cantankerous objections to the political premises they shared with their counterparts across the aisle. The question now is whether in the new Congress to be seated in January the longtime Texas representative will be allowed to chair the Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology on the House Financial Services Committee.

Mr. Paul is the ranking minority member now, so the job would seem to be his after the GOP sweep in the midterm election, but the Republican leadership will decide whether to give the leading critic of the Federal Reserve Bank a prominent role in overseeing the Fed itself as well as the U.S. Mint and the U.S. relationship with the World Bank.

As little as they may relish the idea described above, kicking him to the curb could cause a huge problem with those new Republican representatives who identify themselves with the tea party movement.

Remember, it was Ron Paul supporters who kick-started the tea party into life on Dec. 16, 2007, when they dumped a $6 million "money bomb" into his presidential campaign on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.

Not that all or even most tea partiers are Paulians when the rubber meets the road. Abolishing the Patriot Act, which he advocates, probably wouldn't be at the top of the priority list for the 52 Republican members of Congress who say they'll join a Tea Party Caucus.

Nor would most of these people back an actual anti-interventionist foreign policy, or ending the drug war, or abolishing the Fed, as does Mr. Paul, who has warned against what he sees as a neocon infiltration into the movement.

In fact, loner that he is, the good doctor will distance himself from the House Tea Party Caucus even though he is a towering figure to many of its probable members. Responding to press queries, his chief of staff, Jeff Deist, said, "Congressman Paul decided not to join the Tea Party Caucus. He strongly believes that the tea party movement should remain a grassroots phenomenon, rather than being co-opted by Washington or any political party."

His son, Rand Paul, also a medical doctor, was elected to the U.S. Senate from Kentucky and is working to organize a Tea Party Caucus within the Senate. However much he might or might not agree with his father's more radical ideas remains to be seen, but the potential for some much-needed principled dissent from the justly maligned status quo in the upper chamber is tantalizing. Introducing the American Traveler Dignity Act

Mr. Speaker, today I introduce legislation to protect Americans from physical and emotional abuse by federal Transportation Security Administration employees conducting screenings at the nation’s airports. We have seen the videos of terrified children being grabbed and probed by airport screeners. We have read the stories of Americans being subjected to humiliating body imaging machines and/or forced to have the most intimate parts of their bodies poked and fondled. We do not know the potentially harmful effects of the radiation emitted by the new millimeter wave machines.

In one recent well-publicized case, a TSA official is recorded during an attempted body search saying, “By buying your ticket you gave up a lot of rights.” I strongly disagree and am sure I am not alone in believing that we Americans should never give up our rights in order to travel. As our Declaration of Independence states, our rights are inalienable. This TSA version of our rights looks more like the “rights” granted in the old Soviet Constitutions, where freedoms were granted to Soviet citizens — right up to the moment the state decided to remove those freedoms.

The incident of the so-called “underwear bomber” last Christmas is given as justification for the billions of dollars the federal government is spending on the new full-body imaging machines, but a Government Accountability Office study earlier this year concluded that had these scanners been in use they may not have detected the explosive material that was allegedly brought onto the airplane. Additionally, there have been recent press reports calling into question the accuracy and adequacy of these potentially dangerous machines.

My legislation is simple. It establishes that airport security screeners are not immune from any US law regarding physical contact with another person, making images of another person, or causing physical harm through the use of radiation-emitting machinery on another person. It means they are subject to the same laws as the rest of us.

Imagine if the political elites in our country were forced to endure the same conditions at the airport as business travelers, families, senior citizens, and the rest of us. Perhaps this problem could be quickly resolved if every cabinet secretary, every member of Congress, and every department head in the Obama administration were forced to submit to the same degrading screening process as the people who pay their salaries. A must read article from Reason Magazine about the Ron Paul movement.

Excerpt:

Newsweek started to get at this important aspect of the Paul phenomenon, noting that “tea-partiers, Paulites, etc.─seem less interested in finding practical solutions to Washington's endemic problems than in tearing down Washington itself. As the 2010 elections approach, this nihilistic feeling will only grow stronger.”

That’s because the radical solutions that the Paul worldview demands—an end to overseas military adventurism, ending government’s ability to manipulate paper currency, severe cuts in spending on all the myriad income-shifting promises Washington has made the past 80 years—don’t register as “practical solutions” to (for lack of a better word) the establishment. They seem like nihilism, though they are actually a belief in the American Constitution.

Any standard Republican or movement conservative really can’t take Paul seriously without massive cognitive dissonance. You mean, we really really have to obey the Constitution, we really can’t keep borrowing and inflating forever? Signs like the CPAC vote of a significant number of politically active youngsters believing in Ron Paul are indeed a sign of an apocalypse of sorts for the world that most politicians and pundits know. If Ron Paul is right, then everything they know is wrong.

Ron Paul Questions Bernanke

Representative Ron Paul, the Texas Republican and persistent libertarian critic of the Fed -- he favors something like a return to the gold standard -- said the Fed continued to create "moral hazard" by allowing companies to take risks because they believe they will be bailed out if they fail.

" 'Too big to fail' creates a tremendous moral hazard," he said, "but of course the real moral hazard over the many decades has been the deception put into the markets by the Federal Reserve."

After Mr. Paul suggested that money used in the 1972 Watergate break-in came from the Federal Reserve, and that the Fed had loaned $5.5 billion to the regime of Saddam Hussein of Iraq, Mr. Bernanke replied, "The specific allegations you have made are absolutely bizarre. I have no knowledge of anything remotely like what you've described."

And when Mr. Paul asked whether the Fed would bail out the Greek government, Mr. Bernanke replied, "We have no plans whatsoever to be involved in any foreign bailouts or anything of that sort."

There may have been some boos, but Paul was by far one of the more popular speakers at CPAC this year. “End the Fed!” was one of most-heard chants and his “Campaign for Liberty” group was everywhere. Heck, a lot of the time, it seemed like they, not the American Conservative Union, was CPAC’s host. Even Ann Coulter, who drew a huge crowd herself, felt compelled to give a shout out to Paul-mania, saying she agreed with everything he stands for outside of foreign policy — a statement met with cheers.

Paul supporters were the most visible and vocal throughout CPAC — waving posters, signs, and passing out pamphlets. Unlike the 2012 wannabes, Paul doesn’t play coy: He has a manifesto and wants to broadcast it. Period. No worries about the media spin or whether the speech gets headlines (see Pawlenty, Tiger doctrine). And, instead of the usual anti-Obama talk, Paul framed a hefty chunk of his CPAC address upon a critique of Woodrow Wilson. And the crowd dug it.

Some older CPAC attendees don’t seem to care much for the Texas congressman, sure, but many young activists seem to regard him as a hero of sorts. When he talks about the debt, like he did on Friday, calling it a “monster” that will “eat up” our future, it was with a passion that you can’t fake in politics. He also didn’t mind challenging many of the room’s security hawks on foreign policy. “There is nothing wrong with being a conservative and having a conservative belief in foreign policy where we have a strong national defense and don’t go to war so carelessly,” Paul said. That line was met with a lot of silence, some nods, but, based on my conservations with activists afterward, strong respect from many for not simply pandering.

This is a shocker. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) wins the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in D.C.
For Paul, this is huge, a major boost if indeed he wants to run for president. Though glasses of champagne will not be clinking at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington!
For conservatives, this creates a potential 2010 primary donnybrook if Paul chooses to run.

There have always been two strains of true populism in American politics. On the progressive side there are leaders such as Howard Dean. On the conservative side there are authentic conservatives such as Ron Paul. Neither President Barack Obama nor the banking and Wall Street Republicans are legitimate populists, and Sarah Palin is a polyester populist compared to Ron Paul!
Congratulations to Ron Paul for his stunning and well-earned victory at the conservative meeting. Paul is a true conservative in the classic sense who enriches our national debate and is respected by friends and foes alike.

The decidedly libertarian Texas Republican and former presidential candidate is one of the few elected national figures to offer support for the stance taken by his governor. And it's not unexpected. The tea parties that Paul's candidacy helped galvanize were the same forum where Perry expressed some of his sentiments.

In his video address, Paul framed talk of secession as a uniquely American right, pulled straight from the same thread as the American Revolution.

[Perry] really stirred some of the liberal media, where they started screaming about: 'what is going on here, this is un-American.' I heard one individual say 'this is treasonous to even talk about it.' Well, they don't know their history very well, because when you think about it... it is very American to talk about secession. That's how we came in being. Thirteen colonies seceded from the British and established a new country. So secession is a very much American principle. What about all the strong endorsements we have give the past decade or two to all the republics that seceded from the soviet system? We were delighted about it.

"I think it is worth a discussion," said Paul, later in his four-and-a-half minute long video. "I think people should discuss this. Because right now the American people are sick and tired of it all. And I think the time will come when people will consider it much more seriously, is when the federal government can no longer deliver. That will come when the dollar collapses. (Huffington)

The Hijacking of Our Movement and the Next Wave of Patriots

Like many of you I get the sense that our movement is being hijacked. Over the last couple of years, as our numbers grew and our influence increased, I’ve often wondered how the establishment would try to take down our movement. Would they demonize the patriots in the media like they did in the 90’s? Would they try to infiltrate our movement and set up their own false leaders from within like they’ve done with other political movements? I’ve been waiting to see what the establishment would do because I knew that day would come. They can ignore us for only so long. Well, it appears they are taking another route by attempting to co-opt the movement, keep people locked into left right politics, and water down the message of liberty.

I went to the Orlando Tea Party a few weeks ago. I was really encouraged to see thousands of people show up to protest the bailouts and stimulus packages. I came away from the event discouraged, though. It was essentially an Obama bash fest. Most of the people there were Republicans that seemed to have short memories. I guess they forget that it was their man George Bush that started all of this mess. They spoke of liberty and the Constitution, but they didn’t seem to know what it all meant. Then there is Glenn Beck. We’ve all watched with suspicion the “awakening” of Glenn Beck. Is this a move by the establishment? Sean Hanity, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, and Newt Gingrich are now jumping on the Tea Party bandwagon. It seems apparent that this is a move by the right to hijack the message of liberty and steer it into a dead end.

The more I ponder this move by the establishment, the more I come to realize that they are making a huge mistake. THEY ARE DELIVERING MILLIONS OF PEOPLE INTO OUR HANDS! If Glen Beck’s message really is controlled, then they make a huge mistake by letting him bring up subjects like FEMA camps, globalism, and the gold standard. As people look into these topics on their own, they awaken and start the strange journey down the rabbit hole. As they do independent research on the internet, they arrive at sites with links to other liberty sites. These are OUR websites! This is OUR message. We OWN the message. We dominate the market so to speak. There are thousands and thousands of liberty websites, thousands of YouTube videos, and thousands of liberty minded folks on social networks. The establishment might own the airwaves, but we own the internet.

The problem with trying to control the message of liberty is that you can’t. Once you learn the message of liberty, your world view completely changes. By simply studying the intent of the founders and what rights really are, you awaken to the fact the left/right paradigm is false. You also start to quickly realize that the media is controlled. Once you are awake, you can never go back to sleep.

The first big wave of our movement was the Patriot Movement back in the 80’s and 90’s. The second big wave came with Ron Paul’s presidential run (that’s how many of us got involved.) Folks, like it or not, Glen Beck’ audience and all those that are attending the Tea Parties are the next surge of our movement. There are millions of people that are fed up with the government. They are awakening to the fact that our Federal government no longer represents them. These people are looking for answers. They are looking for something different.

Unfortunately, these people are still locked into the false left/right paradigm. We need to “co-opt” the “co-opt” attempt. We need to steer these people in the direction of true liberty. I think the most important thing we need to do is to grow our movement. They are open to our message. We have a fantastic opportunity to swell our ranks. I don’t know if we’ll have another shot at this. The attempt by the establishment to steal our movement could go either way, but if we do nothing, I know which way it will go.

This is what I’m doing. I think the Tea Parties next week are the perfect opportunity for us to spread the liberty message. We can make a lot of converts there. I plan to go to my local Tea Party, not as a protestor, but as a promoter. While all of the newbies enjoy the event and shake their fists at Washington, I’ll be working the crowd. I’m going to hand out literature and DVD’s. I’m also promoting the event locally. I’ve been on local message boards and tomorrow I start my leafleting campaign. To prevent this from becoming a Republican event, I’m making it clear on the handouts that this event is for all Americans and that both parties are to blame.

VICTORY in Nashville!

The limited-government, paleoconservative, Constitutionalist, libertarian, Barry Goldwater, Ron Paul* Republicans can celebrate a victory! While the outcome of the Davidson County (Nashville) Republican Party election yesterday was not optimal it was still a success nonetheless.

As the Davidson County Campaign for Liberty coordinator, and Republican Liberty Caucus of TN vice chair, I was unable to win the chair of the Davidson County (Nashville) Republican Party, however I was able to solidly secure the Vice Chair position. I was also responsible for other like-minded individuals who were voted onto the Executive Committee as officers in various positions including 4 others and 4 or 5 more who are sympathetic to our cause. That gives us 5 solid seats on the DCRP Executive Committee with a potential of 10 including those who will often vote alongside us!

This is indeed a victory for those who believe in limited government. As the Vice Chair I am now the conscience of the Davidson County Republican Party and will provide balance. However I want to explain how we arrived at these results.
